A path through history, stone and landscape

This emblematic 5.5 km cobblestone road connects the historic center of Barichara with the charming village of Guane. It was declared a National Monument in 1977 and restored in 1988, in recognition of its cultural value and the legacy of the Guane indigenous peoples, who built it with limestone, carefully fitted one on top of the other without any cement, forming walls and paths that still stand the test of time.

To walk this Royal Road is to walk on living history. Depending on your pace and physical condition, the journey can take between 2 and 2.5 hours, always accompanied by a majestic landscape: mountains, native vegetation, birds, and the silence of nature.

Arriving in Guane, you are greeted by a town frozen in time, with deep-rooted traditions and jewels such as the Archaeological and Paleontological Museum, where part of the history of the canyon and the Guane culture is preserved.

Curious fact: This road is also known as Camino de Lenguerke, in honor of Geo von Lengerke, a 19th century German engineer and merchant who promoted the use and restoration of several royal roads in Santander, facilitating trade and the connection between towns.

Recommendations: Bring good hydration, hat, sunscreen and comfortable shoes. Every corner of the trail is perfect for a good photo and a pause in time.
